Music Monday

Berlin influences music with its urban artistic and creative spaces and music, in turn, shapes these spaces. The city and its structures are especially conducive for innovation and creativity – but does the city offer the necessary conditions for enabling the artistic development of the music sector? In our discussion "Music Tech in Berlin- Wie sich die Stadt und der Blick auf sie verändert" players and stakeholders from the scene will discuss problems they see as inherent to the city and formulate their demands for Berlin as a unique location for musical development. Our experts are themselves either musicians, or come from the cultural policy, business, technology or science sectors.

Gender balance, which is a topic of conversation both in the preparation for the re:publica as well as at the conference itself, will also be a focus in this track. Discussions concerning underrepresentation and sexism in the music industry have steadily become more present over the last years. Events and advocacy groups have been founded in order to work against this. The coming Monday will also focus on these issues – on creating awareness, questioning established frameworks, but, most importantly, formulating ways for effectively changing structures. Our experts on the "Solutions for a more equal electronic music scene and business" panel have founded labels and consultancies in the music industry, work at universities, and are themselves DJs.

Music streaming will be another topic of interest. A fresh look at current platforms allows for the formulation of a critique regarding artist’s rights and profit. What data are algorithms using to shape our music tastes? How is music itself changing due to the influence of streaming? Which kinds of collaboration can be established now, and in the future, that can be realised as platforms? The "Stream of Consciousness - the transition of music streaming" discussion offers the chance for an exchange between labels, streaming platforms and music journalists.

Music Pool Berlin will be closing out the evening with talks and drinks. We’ll come full circle with Berlin musicians and event organisers discussing their work, conditions and visions for the future.

The labore:tory, our space for explorers, offers ideal surroundings for any and all things futuristic. A Monday afternoon with artists and other music and technology lovers awaits you. We selected the range of topics with the help of experts from the scene and put together the most exciting submissions for you. So, come together and bring an open ear!
