Privilege Walk

Short thesis:

You are privileged. Or not? We will take the privilege walk together and find out what separates us.

Description:

You are probably aware of some privileges you have or do not have because you were born into them or without. But to what extent do they really have an impact on your life? Don't we live in a socially fair world where everyone has the same opportunities?

The Lise Meitner Society is a non-profit organization that aims to improve gender equality in the natural sciences and mathematics. As such it wants to raise awareness for still persisting prejudices and inequalities. The privilege walk takes one step in this direction.

How does it work?

The whole group will start with each participant standing side-by-side in a line. The moderator will read a number of statements relating to the background, possiblities and opportunities of the participants. For every statement everyone who agrees with it, will take a step forward, everyone else stays at their current positions. The line will spread out with every statement and the diversity of the group will become visible in a very direct and powerful way. In the end we will reflect the excercise in the group and develope a new understanding for our own privileges.

The workshop is for up to 20 participants.

This session takes place from 4 to 5 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday, meeting point @Viaduct.
