Short thesis:

In times of global political turmoil, global development needs strong advocates. It’s time for us, citizens and advocates, to ask our governments to take on responsibility for global challenges. But how? The first step towards asking your government to engage is to understand how it works. This workshop gives you the opportunity to get familiar with the Donor Tracker: a digital toolbox that brings together data-driven insights and qualitative analysis on international development funding. Let’s get started.

Description:

How much do you know about your government’s policy for global development in foreign countries? You have probably heard of a few controversies involving money that your government spends abroad, more often than not when it is being questioned. Still recently in Germany, Ministers suggested cuts in funding for development projects in countries that don’t take back asylum seekers that have been rejected. But how are these decisions made? What do they depend on? In what context do they occur and what implications do they have?

The first step towards asking your government for more and better engagement is to understand how it works. The Donor Tracker seeks to give a comprehensive picture of public policies for development by combining data and qualitative information: more than just numbers, it provides understandable information on decision-making, strategies, orientations. Making this information available if crucial to enable citizens and professional advocates to hold our governments accountable for their commitments, and advance transparency when it comes to global development. And because the issue is global, so is the information the Donor Tracker provides: the website covers 14 major funders of development.

Using the Donor Tracker toolbox, this workshop takes you one step further: we will jointly develop a strategy for how to advocate for global development. Finding our way around decision-making structures, budget processes, looking at funding trends and strategic engagements, we’ll work on coming up with an effective strategy to ask governments to engage for more and better development, using data and information from the Donor Tracker toolbox. It’s time to get started.
