We’re teaming up with a number of different media partners again for the tenth re:publica. Now already in the third round of our series, we introduce the next three seasoned publications for the #rpTEN.

Our motto is TEN. TEN is NET. We take a look in the mirror and see: What’s the status of the digital society in 2016?

More seamless connection between people and people, and between people and each facet of the society. Moreover, technology is shedding more light on how to create more force for good.

Looking back at the last decade: What was the biggest event/ the most interesting development/ the biggest change happening within the digital society?

The invention of the mobile phones, especially the birth of the iPhone.

#rpTEN: What are you looking forward to for the anniversary?

More people who are willing to learn more about China's digital world.

10 years of re:publica: What was your best experience at the last events? What really stayed with you?
Hmm, well it wasn’t the roasted grasshoppers... But: We did find out about the fake real estate company Goldgrund through the re:publica (Alex Rühle’s session "Our city on golden foundations"). That was great! Always nice: the panels dealing with gender and equality. Lots of topics, a wild mix, rich in diversity.

Our motto is: TEN. We take a look in the mirror and ask: What’s your take on the state of the digital society in 2016?
Heading straight for the big guns, are we?! Well, then, we’ll have to dish out some proverbial wisdom: Light and shadow. Freedom and control. Active citizenship and hate. In short: So-so.

Looking back at the last decade: What was the biggest event/ the most interesting development/ the biggest change that happened within the digital society?
Not a very original answer, but it’s true: the smartphone. The biggest quake: Edward Snowden and what we all know since then.

#rpTEN: What are you especially looking forward to for the anniversary?
Our show. And: the beer after our show!

10 years of re:publica: What was your best experience at the last events? What really stayed with you?

10 years of re:publica obviously has more than just one highlight in store. We founded our first branch outside of our founding location, Hamburg, in Berlin at the 2012 re:publica. Since then, we’ve become active in 5 cities and are looking to expand even further. A few of us took to the big stage for the very first time at your event and we’ve grown with you. Every year, women from our network are featured on your stages and help contribute to your exemplary quota of female speakers. We’re very proud of that!

Our motto is: TEN. We take a look in the mirror and ask: What’s your take on the state of the digital society in 2016?

There’s a lot of development – and there’s still a lot that needs to be done. The digital society offers so many chances and so much potential. A quote from our mission statement best exemplifies our attitude: "The digital transformation is our playground, the networks are our strength. That is also what digital leadership signifies. We are confident that we can leverage the full potential of the digital shift through a considered, open and individualized management culture. In a world of digital leadership, innovative, bold and determined women from all cultures have a fixed place in the management of companies, organizations and businesses."

#rpTEN: What are you especially looking forward to for the anniversary?

As every year, we’re looking forward to meeting up with all the women and men from our community from all over Germany. Despite our love of the digital, we also always love a personal and direct exchange. That’s also why the re:publica is an integral part of the calendar for so many #DMW.

The Panama Papers not only shed light onto a secretive system of tax havens and hidden money, but also sparked a debate about how a leak of this size and scope should be reported on. Even before a public relations crisis broke out for politicians using the services of Mossack Fonseca, strong sentiments of scepticism and criticism emerged about the work of the ICIJ and publishing outlets. Could the treatment of the data be biased? Why was Putin featured prominently in the documents while US politicians were absent? Should the 2,7 Terabyte even be published altogether? In the age of digital media, where every user is also broadcaster, the means of publication themselves quickly turn into a topic of hot debate. Which practical ethics should whistleblowing and journalism apply today to ensure that the public is served and informed best? How should investigative reporters react to the feedback of its readers? And how can we make sure a leak’s revelations don’t get lost along the way?

Description:

From Cablegate to Snowden to the Panama Papers: The last years have seen a wide range of ways a leak can seep out. While encryption technologies for secure whistleblowing are increasingly driving investigative journalism, we are also seeing a differentiation of strategies with which media are handling and reporting on these stories. Ten years after Wikileaks was founded, many media houses have established means of receiving and handling sensitive material while organisations like Correct!v, ProPublica or the ICIJ are exploring new ways to foster and fund a renaissance in investigative reporting.

In our 30 min session, we’ll discuss the role of investigative journalism in an age of ever dwindling trust in the media, which publication strategy can work best for what sort of leak and if the future of whistleblowing is a promising one.

10 years of re:publica. What was your greatest experience at the events? What do you remember?

Last year was my first re:publica. I'll never forget it because when I got on stage and started talking, I realized that the wrong Powerpoint presentation was on the huge screen behind me. But I muddled my way through it.

I'd like to say that it is disillusioned, but in a good way.

Edward Snowden.

Sascha Lobo. I really hope he'll be speaking this year.

10 years of re:publica: What were your best experiences from the past events? What memories stood out for you?

The best experiences are the conversations had with people who you'd usually only meet digitally. Walking around the conference, you'll run into VIPs and decision-makers, bloggers and visionaries, colleagues and buddies. But all that's only half of the truth because let's be honest: we're all just there for “Bohemian Rhapsody”...

Our motto this year is TEN. TEN is NET. We're looking into the mirror and reflecting. How do you evaluate the state of the digital society in 2016?

There's a lot to do, let's get to work.

Looking back at the last 10 years of the digital society: in your opinion, what was the biggest event / most interesting development / most felt change over the course of the past years?

The loss of privacy, or rather the loss of control. Numerous scandals, surveillance and hacking attacks have shown us that the internet is not all roses. On the flip side, new networks and media have transformed us from pure consumers into publishers – and that can be a lot of fun.

#rpTEN: What are you looking forward to the most at this year's anniversary edition?

The first cold beer in the sun after a full day of discussions, inspiration and meeting new people.

10 years of re:publica: What were your best experiences from the past events? What memories stood out for you?

We were very impressed by the experience shared by the “Global Innovation Gathering” participants, especially in how they find creative solutions to local problems and thus create new opportunities. Of course, let's also not forget the 3D printed sex toys workshop at #rp14 – you certainly don't see that everyday.

Looking back at the last 10 years of the digital society: in your opinion, what was the biggest event / most interesting development / most felt change over the course of the past years?

With our main focus on makers, we clearly see that the maker movement, this rediscovery of producing things yourself, would have been impossible without the internet. The internet is the home of the community, it's where you come for inspiration and, thanks to open source, to work collaboratively on small and large ideas.

#rpTEN: What are you looking forward to the most at this year's anniversary edition?

We're really looking forward to reporting but also to being involved in the programme.

Our motto this year is TEN. TEN is NET. We're looking into the mirror and reflecting. How do you evaluate the state of the digital society in 2016?

Considering the newly passed legislation on data retention and the use of the so-called Federal Trojan, we see that state of the digital society 2016 in Germany is critical. Anonymity and neutrality are severely undermined by the state's use of digital surveillance within society.

#rpTEN: What are you looking forward to the most at this year's anniversary edition?

As newspaper publishers, we're looking forward to topics, events and workshops dedicated to the interweaving of press and digitisation. We're particularly looking forward to the live video interview with Edward Snowden, hosted by partner event MEDIA CONVENTION Berlin.

re:publica wouldn't be what it is today without our awesome media partners and our 10th edition is no different. Today, we're proud to be present the first three partner organisations.

10 years of re:publica: What were your best experiences from the past events? What memories stood out for you?

Tailoring our full programme to cover the digital revolution during the duration of re:publica 2014. This included producing and broadcasting 35 hours of airtime over the course of three days.

Our motto this year is TEN. TEN is NET. We're looking into the mirror and reflecting. How do you evaluate the state of the digital society in 2016?

The scandals surrounding the hacking of the Chancellor's phone, the protracted exile of Edward Snowden in Russia and the accusations of treason against Markus Beckedahl all seem to have fallen by the wayside, without much resolution, and been overshadowed by the ongoing refugee crisis. Even the UN's call to free Julian Assange was reduced to a side-note in the media.

Instead, in many areas of life, digital changes have gone relatively unnoticed by the majority of people – this includes the huge developments in the Internet of Things, replacing people with “thinking” machines. Sports news are written by algorithms and Julian Nida Rümelin contemplates the moral questions of break assistance in mid-range cars of the future.

Looking back at the last 10 years of the digital society: in your opinion, what was the biggest event / most interesting development / most felt change over the course of the past years?

The absolute implementation of data mining strategies in the USA, adopted by both Apple, Google, Facebook and co. and the state, via the NSA.

#rpTEN: What are you looking forward to the most at this year's anniversary edition?

10 years of re:publica: What were your best experiences from the past events? What memories stood out for you?

We have fond memories of the focus on “European Openness” at re:publica 2012 and, of course, the “Finding Europe” motto of last year.

Our motto this year is TEN. TEN is NET. We're looking into the mirror and reflecting. How do you evaluate the state of the digital society in 2016?

The fight for internet freedom still has a long way to go – in Germany as well as in Europe. We're looking forward to another 10 years of re:publica!

Looking back at the last 10 years of the digital society: in your opinion, what was the biggest event / most interesting development / most felt change over the course of the past years?

For us, the Snowden Revelations was the most important debate the digital society has had in recent years. It's truly frightening, how indifferently many European's have reacted – and continue to react - to the topic of surveillance.

Is it too cheesy to say that it's probably the very first “Bohemian Rhapsody” karaoke?

Our motto this year is TEN. TEN is NET. We're looking into the mirror and reflecting. How do you evaluate the state of the digital society in 2016?

It needs some serious optimising. We still have a lot to do before we can truly say that the whole of society is truly a digital one.

Looking back at the last 10 years of the digital society: in your opinion, what was the biggest event / most interesting development / most felt change over the course of the past years?

Anonymity on the internet was something of the past – today, even the most racist people go online with their real names and accounts, no longer seeming to fear the consequences of their actions. This lurch to the political right, spiralling further and further throughout the web, is one of the scariest developments of the digital society over the last ten years.

#rpTEN: What are you looking forward to the most at this year's anniversary edition?

We're looking forward to many exciting Fintech topics and to attending a re:publica that is no longer mainly aimed at the digital elite.
