re:publica & Media Convention Berlin - #FASHIONTECH LAB BERLIN

Making, tinkering and hacking of fashion. Already in its third year our event #FASHIONTECH Berlin explores the convergence of fashion and technology. And we are happy to announce #FASHIONTECH LAB BERLIN at re:publica 2017! This versatile format fuses many disciplines. It presents new materials and textile technologies visitors can get their hands on at workshops at our makerspace. At the same time we want to explore the intersection of sociology or politics and fashion, fashion design and textile design at talkshows. What's in the future for the development and production of textiles? We are curious!

#FASHIONTECH LAB BERLIN is curated by re:publica. The series of events was born out of a cooperative effort between re:publica and PREMIUM International Fashion Trade Show. Bringing together gadgets, hacking and design this crossover format proves its importance with 3,500 participants at the most recent event in June 2016.

At the last #FASHIONTECH Berlin international experts presented their projects and offered interesting insights. The events featured speakers from Google, Brands4Friends / ebay Fashion, Pinterest, Amazon Fashion, WIRED Germany, Microsoft and Facebook, as well as representatives from startups and designers, including Laura Wass of WXYZ jewelry, Lisa Lang of ElektroCouture, 3M New Ventures' Thomas Andrae and 3D print designer Anouk Wipprecht.

Along with attending numerous talks, participants were able to use a dedicated exhibition area to directly engage with designers and entrepreneurs and get stuck in with some DIY action. They also attended workshops to learn about the full fashion-meets-tech spectrum and experimented with materials, including LEDs.

To learn more about past #FASHIONTECH Berlin events, check out our summaries below. If you can't wait for the next event to kick off, you can entertain yourself in the meantime by going to the re:publica YouTube channel, which features all of the talks.

	Media Coverage

Fits, looks good and glows — SUEDDEUTSCHE.DE

#FASHIONTECH is about the compatibility of fashion and technology, as well as issues in marketing: how is a collection best marketed, and how can PR be used? Social media and the digital world offer enormous potential. — VOGUE.DE

One of the biggest events of Fashion Week was held by the PREMIUM Exhibitions trade show. The ambience on the fourth floor of Kühlhaus at Gleisdreieck was dominated by glittering coats and elaborate LED jewellery of Berlin-based studio ElektroCouture. — HEISE.DE

Or at Fashiontech conference, an intersection of fashion and technology and a satellite of Premium fair, that tackles the topics the whole fashion sector is concerned about. How do the technological possibilities change the way wie wear, buy and distribute apparel? How does the internet change not only the way we behave towards apparel but our bodies and, lastly, us? — ZEIT MAGAZIN

The program at the #FASHIONTECH conference comprised discussions, talks, and short introductions of startups, a good opportunity for founders and developers to show off their ideas to the world. — TAGESSPIEGEL

Technology as a Second Skin – #FASHIONTECH LAB BERLIN at the #rp17

fashiontech_at_republica15_8505cdorothea_tuch.jpg

Get up-close and take a good look at materials and textiles in the workshops at our makerspace. Printed fashion shows itself from its sustainable, and quite comfortable, side in “3D Print it, wear it, compost it”. Printing it, wearing it, and eventually placing it back into the cycle, is easier than ever here. First come, first serve is the name of the game for all of our workshops, as there’s no registering ahead of time. That means, hurry up!

Out of love for our motto and with some tech help, you can sew on your very own, personal declaration of love in the Your Heart on your Sleeve! Make your message wearable workshop. Be it thoughts on diversity and equality or political statements: #FASHIONTECH LAB BERLIN definitely moves far beyond simple eye candy. With increasingly intelligent, integrated technology in clothing items like running shoes or watches, questions concerning data security have now also found their way into fashion. The speakers at the Fashion Tech and Privacy-by-Design workshops want to offer practical solutions for integrating data protection laws into considerations on products that use these technologies. Besides legal insights, you will be discussing the risks, user friendliness and transparency of such products with the workshop leaders, using specific examples from fashiontech.

You can also solder and shine your way to some glowing jewellery. The Glowing Vonoroi Pendant workshop will give you a short introduction into the basics of electronics and soldering so that you can create your very own glowing necklace, right then and there. The best thing about this fashion technology: you’ll be taking your necklace straight home with you. Glowing bacteria; deep-sea jewellery chooses biotechnology as fashion’s partner. It isn’t just about how ocean microorganisms can be harnessed and integrated into wearable jewellery, but also deals with the general question of how can we begin to think more creatively about designing with biology.

#FASHIONTECH LAB BERLIN is curated by the re:publica and is a cooperation with the PREMIUM International Fashion Trade Show. It brings together gadgets, hacking and design: The attendance of 4,000 visitors to the last event in February 2017 shows just how contemporary this crossover is.

Das #FASHIONTECH LAB BERLIN Programm im Überblick:

Makers rejoice! Since 2014 the GIG Makerspace is bringing you the best of 3D printing, laser cutting, soldering, wiring, moulding and building. 2017 is surely no exception. From fashiontech to custom-made DIY limbs to knitted generative patterns: have a look at our awesome demo, exhibition and workshop programme, this year hosted by Fab Lab Berlin and GIG. Now for the fourth time, the GIG Makerspace is the place at re:publica where people can come to tinker, experiment, create, learn and share knowledge. We love getting people involved in maker culture, from veterans to complete newbies. So whether you are an experienced maker or a N00b, come learn, code, build and geek out with us. We are happy to show you around!

Constant Elements – From sub:marine to #FASHIONTECH LAB BERLIN

This year we have several constant elements at the space: sub:marine is one of them. Are you into glowing bacteria and mud-batteries? Come check out the sub:marine space including a wet:lab and exhibition to explore topics around the ocean. Learn how to nurture photobacteria at home until they glow beautifully and other fun stuff.

Another exciting area is our #FASHIONTECH LAB BERLIN corner. Get your hands-on experience with several demos. For example, a digital project on how to protect women safely through smart clothing in India. Or let Samira Akhavan, Victoria Pawlik, Jojo Shone, Samira Akhavan, Rute Chaves show you their knitted generative patterns. Together with you we will create a continuous machine knitted textile throughout re:publica. Let’s design a data generated pattern based on your answers to a short questionnaire that we will translate into a knitted textile with the help of our hacked knitting machines.

We will guide you through the steps and teach you the basics. Don’t worry, no previous knowledge needed! Your pattern can both become a part of the big re:publica textile data visualisation and be knitted individually – and you can take it home. And come and customise your #rp17 merch at the Makerspace with the DTG t-shirt and canvas bag printer, printing the popular hashtags of re:publica 2017 using a direct to garment printer by Fab Lab Berlin. Last but not least, we are happy to introduce you to the LabMobile, our very own Makervan!

The Workshops – A Space to Hangout and Discover

For fashion lovers, start weaving your own fabrics! Come and create your own textile tool with Samira Akhavan. You will be using digital fabrication technologies to create a weaving loom that you will be able to bring home to start weaving your own textiles. Another workshop by Norma Barr will teach you how to print designs using compostable 3D filament material. Yay!

Are you interested in health-related topics! Isabelle Olschewski will guide you how to build a super handy phone speaker amplifier to go. She will offer two different designs, from which the participants can select. Something techier you can try with Mirella Alistair. She will build with you your very own microfluidic biochip. Attention, music fans! Build your own Synthesizer with Nidhi Mittal and Avik Gupta. And Raúl Quesada Navarro will teach you how to build and program an Open Source Robotic Arm. And don’t forget about this year’s re:publica LOL motto. Saad Chinoy will hold a workshop on how to make interactive love-letters with circuit stickers. Cutesy!

gig_c_hakimgeorgehakim_h1a7309_view_rp.jpg

The GIG Makerspace at #rpTEN

More Demos and Exhibitions at the Makerspace

We have so much more for you this year! For example, come and take part in “Paper Under Control” by Eitan Rieger and Dorota Orlof. What could happen if Gutenberg, the inventor of the modern printing press, had a contemporary design program? Paper Under Control is an art project that combines the beauty and imperfection of old school printing technology with the capabilities of contemporary design and manufacturing techniques. All prints are designed on a computer. However, instead of using a digital printer, the outcome is engraved on a laser cutter and then printed with a custom designed printing press.

Explore the awesome “Time Portal” by EItan Rieger and Felix Klee. This cyberpunk time portal radiating heavy light was created as an exhibit at the Maker Faire Berlin 2016, as part of Fab Lab Berlin's booth. Time Portal is an interactive light sculpture that creates a constantly rotation light ring, which in term slowly follows the direction and speed of a spectator's hand if placed inside the portal. The final piece is 100 cm in diameter and is a part of a limited series of seven.

Develop open source products for wheelchairs. At “Made for my wheelchair” by Nicolai Hertle (Makea) you will create using maker technologies in an interdisciplinary team of wheelchair users, technicians and designers. The result will be an open source product that can be individually adjusted and built with the help of the maker technologies.

Create custom DIY limbs with Park Geun Woo and Yair Kira (Makea)! Custom DIY Limbs is a yearlong project focusing on research and development of digital solutions for producing individualized and functional prosthetics. The main focus is on lower knee prosthetics with research in finding if and how digital tools can impact traditional methods of production.

Take part in the “Anti-Flag” workshop by Charlie-Camille Thomas to support re:publica’s LOL motto. Preaching openness and mixity, you will create flags to express our love out loud. You will be able to act up and raise your democratic voice. In a more technical aspect you will learn the process of printing on textile with the Polyprint TexJet machine, available at Fab Lab Berlin.

Check out our full workshop programme here. Come find us the STATION’s main hall during all three days of re:publica!

GiG is supported by German Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

This year the Global Innovation Gathering community, GIG for short, will be joining the re:publica with over 40 participants from 20 countries. Partners GIZ and StartHubs AsiaBerlin and the support from Mozilla allows us to invite speakers from outside Europe to ensure the re:publica programme encompasses a diversity of perspectives from all over the world.

At re:publica 2017, GIG will once again be taking over the conference stages on numerous occasions during the three days. Just like last year, GIG will host a pop-up makerspace in cooperation with the FabLab Berlin where participants can learn about innovation in hardware, tinker, solder and get their hands dirty in various workshops.

What does fashion have to do with privacy? A lot, if the technology used in fashion tech collects and processes personal data. This can be the case, for example, if a sensor embedded within a pair of running shoes captures the steps and velocity of the wearer in order to analyze the increase in performance. If the runner is able to access that data via a personal login on the website of the manufacturer, then this kind of data is personalized and data protection law applies. But don’t panic: Data protection law doesn’t need to spoil all the fun. On the contrary, if developers of data-driven products understand data protection law as just another factor increasing the quality of those products, then the question is not: Is this product legal or illegal? Rather it is: How can I develop the product in a way that satisfies the needs of my customer? This is the theme of the workshop “Fashion Tech and Privacy-by-Design.” In this workshop, we will enable you to develop your products in a way that makes data protection law a competitive advantage, rather than a constant threat.

Description:

For each fashion tech idea, we will form one group who will develop a privacy-by-design solution for this product category.

During the workshop, we will not only consider the relevant legalities; we will also look at elements like user experience and the usability of the respective privacy-by-design solution. Typical development questions will include: What does the user of my product, aka my customer, want? Does he or she want to specifically control the data that is processed that is processed by his or her clothes? Or does the user instead want to control the risks associated with this data processing? Does my product actually create such a risk? And how can said risk be measured? If I want to enable my customer to control such risks on his or her own, how should I do this? How can I avoid aggravating or overwhelming my customer with a lengthy informed consent request? How should I obtain such informed consent? Do I do so when my customer is buying my product in the online shop... or do I use something attached to the clothing itself?

During the workshop, we will address these items within two thematic sections: In the first part, we will carry out a privacy risk assessment in order to determine whether the product creates any type of risk and, if so, what kind of risk is posed to the potential customer. In the second section, we will develop concrete privacy-by-design solutions mitigating such risks. At the end of our workshop, we will present the various privacy-by-design solutions developed for each product idea, and compare and evaluate them in light of the added value created for the customer.

Fashion is an entity seeking love and life. For this installation, we create a secret space for fashion and biology to meet. Deep in the darkness of a black box, a symbiosis of microbiology and human-machine craft. A set of four jewellery pieces will be on display illuminating the love of deep-sea life. The pieces of jewellery are made from acrylic and light optic fibers using a 3d printer and laser cutter. This installation will get you exploring the world of citizen science and digital fabrication. It is also meant as a follow-up from Mirela Alistair's workshop, where she begins with introducing the culture onto agar in a petri-dish. Next step is manipulating the media, to be adapted for any design project.

The number of participants for the workshop is limited to 15. There is a sign up sheet available at the Makerspace - first come first serve.

We believe that many voices have to be heard and we propose to use the wearable technology as an element that goes beyond simple glowing and becomes a means of communication. Let's use the wearable as an element that can convey a message!

If you have a message to share with the world, come and join us in this workshop! We will show you how to use this technology with a basic sewn circuit as a way to express yourself and take it with you everywhere!

Description:

The workshop begins with the presentation of the wearable's universe and how to use it as an object to express your ideas! Soon we will present the system that we developed in which you can write and rewrite your message and detach the electronic part from the clothes when it need to be washed. After the presentation we will start working on your message and finding the best typography to use in your project. When your message is already designed we will start to write it! Do you have the perfect clothing or bag to use as a base for your wearable? Come with it, or use one of our fabric handbags!

Max 10 participants

Today we will challenge this concept and show how 3D printed fashion is both sustainable, comfortable and even washable

Create your own unique pattern in illustrator and turn this into a fully compostable, flexible fashion accessory that you can wear, love, wash and then compost.

Limited to 10 participants

Description:

We will use photoshop to design a pattern and then turn it into a 3D digital design. I will teach you how this is then prepared for a desktop type 3D printer. Using a locally produced flexible, and compostable 3D filament material we will produce the designs directly on the 3D printers. If you have a laptop with photoshop that would be great.

The number of participants for the workshop is limited to 15. There is a sign up sheet available at the Makerspace - first come first serve.
