How to raise money for open source projects

Politics & Society
re:publica 2017

Short thesis:

Encrypted communications, online participation, anonymous browsing – there are many open source tools that help to maintain our freedom online. But despite the importance and relevance of such tools it can be hard to fund their development, make them sustainable and grow communities around them. Next to this Discussion, there will also be a Meetup with the Panelists.

The Open Tech fund and the Prototype Fund are funding programs that seek to challenge the status quo – they don’t merely want to encourage the development of new tools – they grow new sustainable and diverse communities. Their role is versatile and challenging.  In this session we offer you a look behind the scenes of two major funds for open source projects. We’ll answer questions that you can’t find on any FAQ page. We’ll talk about challenges, genius ideas, good and bad proposals,  bureaucracy, community building and more.
